Villa away: First visit to Big Brad

author Posted by: roversreturn on date Oct 29th, 2008 | filed Filed under: League, Predictions

I’ll admit to writing this preview after the game has kicked off. Bad practice I know but I completely forgot to write it!

Don’t worry it’s still 0-0 so anything can happen.

Some very ominous sounding news, included in the starting eleven but not actually emerging was Santa. He made way for Benni McCarthy who, it would seem plays as a lone striker. Rovers going with five across the middle, MGP back in the side for the match.

The last few meetings with Villa haven’t been too fruitful for us recently.

I’m predicting 2-1 to Rovers.

Sorry for the short build-up piece, it just seems a little pointless as we have already kicked off!

COME ON YOU BLUES!

Premiership: Rovers 1-1 Boro: Conclusions

1. We need more invention up front. I thought we looked good in our build up play but couldn’t finish the moves off.

2. Santa Cruz has gone off the boil. A bit worrying as it coincides with speculation over his future, shades of Benni’s potential move to Chelsea at the start of last season followed by his poor form.

3. Mike Dean is a terrible referee, as the empty seat in front of me at Ewood will testify.

4. Andre Ooijer is a cracking defender and we should not be looking to sell him. He would be very much a first team player if I was picking the side. Ryan Nelsen also made some great tackles and looks to be getting back to his reliable self. Read more »

Boro at home: Three easy points?

author Posted by: roversreturn on date Oct 24th, 2008 | filed Filed under: League

Rovers take on Boro tomorrow in what promises to be an ordinary game.

Boro are struggling at the minute, only one win since August, a 1-0 win at the JJB breaking up a run of four defeats, and Rovers should take full advantage of the wounded Riversiders who had a 5-0 thrashing inflicted on them by Chelsea last week.

However, as the Guv’nor, who spent three seasons and made over 100 appearances for Boro, has pointed out himself, we need to be wary as they will be desperate to bounce back from that hammering and are by no means a weak side. Read more »

Where’s Egil?

author Posted by: roversreturn on date Oct 23rd, 2008 | filed Filed under: Reminiscences

A wonderful little tale from a former Rover who never fulfilled his potential.

Ben Burgess, now playing for Blackpool, says this in his column in the News of the World:

“…When I was at Blackburn, we left Crystal Palace’s ground in south London and were just heading out of the city when suddenly Craig Short blurted out: “Where’s Egil?”

Yes, we’d managed to leave Egil Ostenstad behind. The consensus among the lads was to carry on without him but, after giving it a good deal of thought, the then manager Graeme Souness made us go back.”

Online box office

author Posted by: roversreturn on date Oct 22nd, 2008 | filed Filed under: Uncategorized

I may sound as though I’m behind the times here so if I do, I apologise.

But for the first time last night I used the online ticket office to reserve tickets for Saturday’s game against Boro. Since I went to university I haven’t had a season ticket as it has been impossible for me to get to every game.

However, when I do go I either ring up to book tickets or buy them from the ticket office at Ewood Park.

Well anyway, having decided to go to the game with two friends I decided to book tickets last night, unfortunately the ticket office was closed so I decided to give the net a whirl and it is superb. Read more »

In case you weren’t aware, Rovers now have their own song. Recorded by a local band called Morning Call.

The band are about to release their first single but have been having this recording about their beloved football club played before matches at Ewood for a few games now:

And here’s the full song with a few clips from the last few seasons:

And to plug the lads, here’s their debut single:

Premiership: Bolton 0-0 Rovers: Conclusions

author Posted by: roversreturn on date Oct 21st, 2008 | filed Filed under: League

Hello there reader. It’s been a while. I’m going to get my excuses out straight away and then focus on the task at hand!

I have recently got my first job in the world of the British press (Hurrah)! That has meant moving to Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire, where I have been without the Internet for the first few weeks of my time here. Alas, that has now been put right and, hopefully, I can get back on with this wonderful blog of mine!

So. A goalless draw at our local rivals. Here’s what I make of it.

1. How in God’s name did Jase ‘the pace’ Roberts miss that golden opportunity to give us the bragging rights? It was an absolute sitter! Read more »
